Certificate of Origin for Imports into Georgia
Preparing to claim a preferential import-duty rate? Check the origin evidence with your supplier before shipment, not only when the cargo reaches Georgian customs.
A certificate is not the same as a duty exemption
Portex’s customs guide explains that qualifying preferential origin can reduce import duty. A document labelled “certificate of origin” alone does not confirm eligibility: the goods and proof must meet the applicable trade agreement. Import VAT can still apply.
What to send for an origin check
- 01
Product details and invoice
Send a clear goods description, the commercial invoice and the proposed HS code, if available. The standard duty rate depends on classification, so establish that before assuming a certificate will save tax.
- 02
Origin and shipment route
Tell us where the goods were produced and where they will be dispatched from. Ask your supplier for origin evidence rather than relying on the seller’s address or the loading port.
- 03
The proposed proof of origin
Request a copy of the document your supplier intends to provide. Ask Portex to check which agreement and evidence apply to your actual goods; do not assume one certificate format works on every route.
- 04
The rest of the shipment paperwork
Provide the packing list and transport document alongside the invoice. Checking the paperwork together before arrival helps identify missing or inconsistent information.
When to use the calculator’s preferential-origin option
Use the 0% preferential-origin option only after eligibility and the supporting proof have been checked. If they are not confirmed, estimate using the applicable standard duty band. The calculator is an estimate, not an origin decision.
